Every furniture buyer planning a China sourcing trip lands in the same debate: base the trip in Guangzhou or in Foshan? The two cities sit 30 minutes apart by car, share an airport rail link, and yet run completely different furniture markets.

Guangzhou is the trading city: the Canton Fair, international showrooms, freight forwarders and banks. Foshan is the factory city: Lecong and Longjiang alone host thousands of furniture producers, and the product density is unmatched anywhere in the world. How the two cities split the furniture trade

Guangzhou’s role is transactional. The Canton Fair, held in the Pazhou complex, is the largest trade fair in China and the place where new factories and buyers meet, with the furniture and home-goods halls running in the spring and autumn sessions; the official calendar is published on the Canton Fair website. Around the fairgrounds sit international showrooms, freight forwarders, banks and inspection agencies, which is why Guangzhou works as the coordination base for a sourcing trip.

Foshan’s role is productive. The city is the furniture capital of China, with Lecong’s market corridor, Longjiang’s sofa and upholstery cluster, and Shunde’s casegoods and hardware networks. A buyer can walk factory showrooms in the morning, visit production lines in the afternoon, and compare ten suppliers for one product inside a day. Foshan’s factory clusters by product

Foshan splits by district and product line. Lecong runs the longest furniture market street in the world, strongest in living-room and bedroom casegoods and in imported showroom pieces. Longjiang is the sofa and upholstered furniture heartland, with hundreds of frame, foam and fabric suppliers within a few kilometers. Shunde adds kitchen and bathroom cabinets, office furniture and metal furniture, plus the hardware and accessory suppliers that feed the whole region.

Specialty markets sit around the core: marble and stone suppliers in the Shunde area, lighting in Guzhen to the west, and metalwork in the northern districts. That means a mixed order can be sourced within a single day loop: sofas in Longjiang in the morning, casegoods in Lecong in the afternoon, and lighting or hardware the next morning. Guangzhou’s trading and fair infrastructure

Guangzhou earns its place in the itinerary with three assets. The Canton Fair gives first-time buyers a structured way to shortlist factories, because every exhibitor is vetted and the halls are organized by product group. The Pazhou exhibition district and the city’s professional furniture markets host year-round showrooms for exporters who do not exhibit. And the service layer, freight forwarders, labs and inspection companies, is denser in Guangzhou than in Foshan, which matters when you need a pre-shipment inspection scheduled mid-trip.

Timing matters more in Guangzhou than in Foshan. Hotel prices triple during fair weeks, and factory owners are busy, not more available. Buyers who miss the fair can still see the permanent showrooms, but the fair is the single best first-trip structure for a new category. A practical split for your sourcing trip

For a first trip, base in Guangzhou for one to two days: walk the Canton Fair halls for your category, shortlist ten factories, and line up a forwarder and an inspection agency. Then move to Foshan for two to four days: visit the shortlisted factories in Lecong and Longjiang, compare samples, and commit the supplier list before you fly home.
